Exploring Perth's inner city sights

While Perth is often described as one of the most isolated cities in the world, what surprised us most was how relaxed, modern and incredibly easy it was to explore. Wide open spaces, beautiful waterfront areas and a clean, easy-to-navigate city centre made it the perfect place to spend a few days wandering without any real plans.

After spending time exploring Western Australia with our good friend Sugnet it was time to wrap up our trip with a few nights in the city. One of our favourite discoveries was just how effortless it was to move around the city using Perth’s public transport network. Staying slightly outside the CBD gave us the best of both worlds, with easy access into the city while still enjoying a quieter neighbourhood feel. Perth’s CAT buses and integrated public transport system made getting around simple and stress-free, especially for visitors wanting to explore without needing a car.

During our stay we based ourselves at Club Wyndham Perth in West Perth, which turned out to be an excellent location. The resort was comfortable, quiet, and within easy reach of the city centre thanks to the nearby bus services. Being able to jump on a bus and be in the CBD or down at the waterfront within minutes made exploring Perth incredibly convenient. It also gave us the flexibility to head back for a break during the day before heading out again in the evening.

One of the absolute highlights of our time in Perth was visiting Kings Park. Sitting high above the city, the park offers some of the best panoramic views over the Perth skyline and Swan River. It is hard to believe such a huge natural space exists right beside the city centre. The park itself is massive, larger than New York’s Central Park, and is filled with walking trails, gardens and open green spaces perfect for slowing down and simply enjoying the surroundings.

Our hotel offered free e-scooters, so we used these so that we could cover as much ground as possible. Cruising slowly through the park felt instantly relaxing, with native bushland, peaceful walking paths and endless lookout points all surrounded by nature. There is also impressive playground "island" those looking to entertain kids for a few hours in the outdoors. We quickly understood why locals speak so highly of it.

Another area of the city that we found ourselves returning to several times was Elizabeth Quay. This modern waterfront precinct has such a great atmosphere, especially in the late afternoon as the city starts to light up. The combination of river views, public art, restaurants and walking paths makes it one of those places where you can easily lose track of time simply wandering around.

We spent one evening enjoying dinner at The Island at Elizabeth Quay, which quickly became one of our favourite dining spots in Perth. Sitting out overlooking the water with a drink in hand while watching the city lights reflect across the river was exactly the relaxed Perth vibe we had been hoping for. The atmosphere was casual and lively without feeling rushed, making it the perfect place to settle in for the evening after a day exploring the city.

What stood out most to us about Perth was the lifestyle feel of the city. Even in the middle of the CBD everything felt spacious, calm and easy. There was no rush, no chaos, just a relaxed energy that made the city incredibly enjoyable to explore. Between the beautiful parks, waterfront precincts and easy public transport, Perth ended up being one of those cities that quietly surprises you.

A few days here gave us just enough time to get a taste of what Perth has to offer, but it definitely left us wanting to come back and explore more of Western Australia in the future.
